The Summer Palace is a frequent stop for me in Beijing, and my earlier photographs from 2004 and 2005 include some of its history.  On this early autumn day I decided to take detail shots of features I haven’t photographed to now.  This is the roof of the Pavilion of Buddhist Fragrance, the Summer Palace’s most prominent structure, which is currently undergoing renovation in preparation for the Olympics.

Façade of the Temple of the Sea of Wisdom, just behind the Pavilion of Buddhist Fragrance at the Summer Palace.

Roofline character tiles at the Summer Palace.  Parts of the Summer Palace grounds are so steep that the roofline of one structure appears right by a path.

A wall tile so heavily glazed that it looks gooey.

Rooftop on a small building within the Summer Palace on a hillside behind the Pavilion of Buddhist Fragrance.

Two Buddhas on the façade of the Temple of the Sea of Wisdom.
