Aberdeen
This city on the south side of Hong Kong Island doesn’t have much to offer on land; it’s crowded with apartments. But on the sea, it’s different. Fishermen use these houseboats as part-time residences - an interesting contrast to the many apartments on land behind them.
A sampan just like the one I’m riding passes by. The tires ringing the boat keeps damage to a minimum when the boats invariably bump against each other.
The sampan driver didn’t have much to say once the tour price was negotiated (HK$50 for a half-hour tour). Too bad, because some history of the harbor and its houseboats would have been appreciated.
More houseboats, with new high-rise apartments under construction in the background. The beautiful south side of Hong Kong Island has much more greenery than the north, but it is slowly succumbing to development, both here and in nearby Stanley.
The only dog I’ve ever seen in Hong Kong happened to be on this houseboat; apparently it’s a house pet. Goodness knows where the owners take it for a walk.
