Boothbay Harbor Area
Boothbay Harbor. I was fortunate to arrive here just before a magnificent sunset.

On a map, the Boothbay peninsula looks surprisingly like a lobster facing the ocean, with the town of Boothbay Harbor atop the lobster’s head. At the tip of the eastern claw is Ocean Point, where unusual rock formations like this can be found along the shore.

Beyond the tip of the peninsula’s western claw on Southport Island is the village of Newagen, and just offshore of its town pier is Cuckolds Light, named after the dangerous shoals nearby. Originally constructed as a fog signal, the structure became a lighthouse when a lantern was placed on top fifteen years later, in 1907. The boathouse and lighthouse keeper’s residence, once part of this structure, were destroyed in a 1978 blizzard.

The Perfect Maine Lunch, at a lobster pound near that same pier in Boothbay Harbor. Half the lobsters sold in the United States, and a quarter of those sold in the world, come from Maine.
