Belted Galloway cattle at Aldermere Farm, Rockport.  No, you’re not seeing things; these are all black cows with white midriffs.  For obvious reasons, they are also known as “Oreo cookie” cows.

Belted Galloways at Aldermere Farm, Rockport.  “Belties” originated centuries ago in the old Galloway district of southwest Scotland, a coastal region where, like Maine, the weather can get quite brisk.  Though the original cattle on this farm came from Pennsylvania, more were brought from Scotland as recently as fifty years ago.

The Aldermere Farm claims to have the oldest continually-operated herd of Belted Galloway cattle in the United States today.
