Winter Sports

Winter is one of those seasons you either love or hate; there isn’t really any in-between, unfortunately. It is a truth universally acknowledged that one of the most exciting things about winter is the initiation of the winter sports season. Active participants in the sports will be heading up to the slopes and engaging in skiing, snowboarding, sledging, ice skating or curling, while those who prefer the warmth of the fireplace will follow the winter Olympics and other championships on their television screens from the cosy comfort of the sofa. Something about the snow and freezing temperatures, and the types of sports that come hand-in-hand with them, simply has us hooked one way or another.

Winter sports

Winter sports are predominantly performed on snow or ice and, naturally, during the cold season of the year. As a general rule, they are more popular, practised and followed in countries which lie the farthest north: the ones which happen to enjoy a long winter season. However, over the years, winter sports have gained so much popularity that people from regions that are not lucky enough to enjoy snow-enabled pastimes travel north and into the mountains to get a piece of the action.

Indoor winter sports

Nowadays, having to travel to snow or experiencing a dry season needn’t always be deal-breakers. In certain countries and areas where temperatures don’t allow for snow or ice in the first place, facilities such as inside slopes and ice rinks with artificial snow and ice have been introduced, so fear of missing out has become a thing of the past.

Winter magic

There’s just something about the first snowfall of the year that has us all captivated. The winter and Christmas season feels incomplete without some winter sports pastime or another, be it building snowmen, dusting off those sleds from the garage and dragging the kids into the back yard or nearest hill for some sledging fun, or polishing those alpine skis and snowboards for a ride up the escalator and a swish down the nearest slope. For the homebodies who prefer the warmth of the house, no winter is quite complete without the alpine ski TV marathon and ice skating championships, with a glass of mulled wine or mug of hot cocoa whilst wrapped up in warm blankets on the sofa. So, whether you’re an active participant in the plethora of winter sports and activities out there, or you prefer to watch them on the television screen, there’s no denying that winter sports are part and parcel of the chilly season, and there is not a dull moment in the wintertime with regards to the entertainment and thrills they provide.

So what are you waiting for? Grab those coats and go and get a piece of the action; the season only comes around once a year after all! And there’s no excuse to be left out. With the plethora of different types of pastime out there to try, we urge you to don your warmest jackets and snow boots and run with it! It’s twice the fun if you’re actually engaging in the action rather than just observing – it may feel like an effort, but in the long run you’ll be happy that you took that plunge.
